GILL INSTITUTE FOR NEUROSCIENC (UA-GILL-IUBLA)

The Gill Institute's mission is to determine the mechanisms underlying neurological health and dysfunction to enable breakthrough interventions that transform mental health and improve quality of life, while disseminating knowledge to educate the next generation of neuroscientists.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Oversees the construction, maintenance, and use of apparatus designed specifically for the study of sleep in the fly Drosophila melanogaster

General Responsibilities

• Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results
• Organizes analytical data of performed experiments
• Installs and maintains research equipment
• Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training
• Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management
• Trains junior-level staff
• Plans experiments and short-term goals
• May submit findings for publication
• May travel in order to service various research sites

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree in science or related field

Required

WORK EXPERIENCE

• 2 years of related research experience

Preferred

• Training in Information Technology or Computer Programming
• Familiarity with Linux platforms (Arch Linux), python, Structured Query Language (SQL), and R programming language
• Experience setting up Wi-Fi stations and routers
• Familiarity with web-based access to router IPs like NETGEAR (or similar)
• Experience with command line interfaces (CLI)
• Experience using GitHub

• Ability to troubleshoot computer/device interfaces
• Ability to read and manipulate python codes, use Raspberry PIs, and integrate Arduino and motor control modules
• Ability to read SQL data

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
